A – Z Challenge – Sci-Fi Films C is for Capricorn One

Hi there bloggies, I’ve been seeing some post warning me of an A – Z Challenge and I was curious. I’ve seen this around before but have never participated, for some mad reason I thought I would give it a go.

So here I am.

My theme is the A-Z of Scifi moves, I’ve not given this a great deal of thought and I know of a number but I won’t lie there’s some I will struggle with. But anyway, here goes starting strangely enough with Z. Ha! Joking A!

C is for… Capricorn One

Capricorn One – the first manned mission to Mars. Just before launch the three crew are removed from the space vehicle and taken to a secure location right in front of the eyes of the watching public and politicians.

Because it had been realised too late that the life support system would fail and the political fallout for the space program from this a few high up in the program decided to fake the mission.

Things run well until one of the control room operators smells a rat and tells his journalist buddy. When the operator vanishes the journalist starts to believe his story and finds himself in the firing line.

Then things really go wrong when the spacecraft is destroyed on re-entry. Suddenly the three astronauts cannot be seen again. When they work this out they make a bid for freedom. With agents on hot on their heels they have to use every instinct to stay alive and reach civilisation.

The reason this film, in my view has such a great following is that many conspiracy theorists believe this is the kind of thing that happened with the Moon landings, it was all made up and filmed on a set. Perhaps that was it’s appeal at the time and some can’t believe that it was made.

It shows it’s age but it still works today and is gripping, its definitely worth a watch!

The following and genre created from this is huge and it still going today. It’s generally a thumbs up for this and the sequel Aliens which is similar except there’s lots of aliens being blown away by hard ass marines.

That makes for letter C – D should follow tomorrow!

  1. Never saw this one. My ‘humph’ at Conspiracy Theorists and Moon Landings would make it impossible for anyone to sit alongside me and enjoy the film while I droned on about ‘CT-ers’
