Letter to Myself – Open Next Year (2019)

Firstly as this is my first post of 2018 – Happy new year to you all!

Back in 2016 my friend Erin of Bubbles and Beebots tagged me on a great little idea to write a letter to myself to open in a year’s time. I’ve been keeping this up since then as I have found this to be an interesting and relevant way to remember where I was a year ago and maybe help guide me on the year ahead.

For anyone who reads this I would definitely recommend giving this ago at least once as see what you think of it. Do it in the way that you think is best, there’s no rules and for me at least this is far more worthwhile that any new year resolutions. This isn’t just about looking back, it’s about looking forward too.

Last year’s letter is here:

Open letter to myself 2018

Dear future me,

As I write this 2018 is still young and fresh, I’ve made sure that this is the first post of 2018 quite deliberately so that I approach the year and this this post without any opinions to contaminate it.

The year ahead in many ways looks troubled, the world is changing and an in many ways not for the better. There is trouble, uncertainty and the path we all tread is bumpy, winding and unclear. You need to remember to let go of the things you cannot control, do not let them trouble you, do not let these things take away any sense of wonder, or joy as there is so much of this in life and you Simon are someone who see’s things that others don’t.

Focus on the things that you  need to do, the things you have to do and the things that are going to take you towards that person that you want and need to be there’s stories to write, worlds to create, skills you never thought you had to hone and improve.

Last year you started things you need to finish – finish them.

Start the things you need to start so you can at least try to finish them.

Don’t be disheartened by failure, it just means you’ve not found a way to succeed yet. Keep trying to find that way where you don’t need to rely so much on others, think of that way that you can try and be self sufficient.

Enjoy what it is that you have, don’t seek happiness over that horizon that you’l likely never reach. Enjoy the here and the now, every breath, every up and down because this is the ride that is your life and as far as you know it only comes once.

That’s all – how hard can that be? If spared I’ll see you in 2019 and we’ll see how you got on.

Simon (Future)

This started as a tag, so normally I would tag people but this is important to anyone and possibly everyone so if you want to do this – do it! Let me know if you do off the back of my post and also tag this with DearFutureMeTag.

Don’t forget – Make sure you remember to pick it up in 2019!

Happy new year everyone!

Simon 🙂

    1. Hi Eliza, glad you liked it. To tag someone copy the web link to a post (not their main page) into a hyperlink onto a post. That will then ping back and let the blogger know you’ve tagged them.

If you need further help let me know 🙂

  1. To paraphrase a military dictum ‘No plan survives first contact with Day-to Day Life’. Trying, flexibility and keeping keeping on are the most important facets.
Since you display so many ideas and drive Simon I’m fair certain you’ll continue upwards and onwards

      1. Note you’re being cheeky, but I’m not sure if I should admit that lol.
I have been known to come up with an intelligent word every now and again. As for my crime… Probably pretending to be human lol

  2. Happy New Year, Simon. That’s a fantastic idea. In writing things down that way you are getting closer to what really matters to you and how it could be accomplished. That way you can make it happen because you are more focused. How amazing when you read it again in a year and see how far you have come!

    1. Hi Erika, happy new year to you too – Honestly you should do this. I’ve done this three years in a row now and even if I haven’t achieved something it’s interesting to see the point I was at and where I have come even if it’s where I didn’t think I would be 🙂
