Part 4:

Sela and Tars rushed over to the central control console in the middle of the room, Tars was puncing in commands, trying to bring up the Mira sensor array.

“I’ve got it!” he said with a sense of victory.

“Have a look at sector 42, quadrant 7, that’s where our visitors should have been.” Sela anxious now. There were other energy accelerator on Mira, but the others may now be out of use, there was no way to tell yet. The large screen flickered a small irregular shape appeared just off centre.

“Magnify as much as you can onto that shape.” Tars instructed an operator. Just then the head of security surrouned by six armed men all in black walked in and presented their weapons at Sela and Tira.

“I’m here to take you to answer for the destruction of the energy accelerator to Chancellor Galvor” Sela looked around him.

“Why do you need six armed men to secure two unarmed people? Get your weapons away from Tira or I’ll…”

“You’ll what? The clearly angered security heard barked at him”

“I’ll make life very difficult for you. I’m sorry about the accelerator. I had no time to explain to anyone and no choice. The planet is now, hopefully saved as you can see” Sela took the secuity head to the window to see the sun almost set against red sky, a sky like it had never been seen before even in the Indian summers as they turn to Autumn. The secuity head ushered for the weapons to be lowered.

“What happened?” He asked in a whisper.

“A Draconian space cruiser had somehow put a quantum sigularity onto the planet, time was moving very slowly for us, we needed the accelerator to get the sigualarity away” They stood there for several minutes watching as the sky turned dark.

“Where has it gone?” The secuity head asked.

“Where do you think I sent it?” Sela replied with a wicked smile. The security head smiled back.

Tars spoke up “It’s all true sir – Doctors Diemos and Phoelan have saved the planet, they only just got back with their lives”

The security head was about to speak, Sela cut in “No time, let see what’s going on with our Draconian friends out there” Striding off, he stopped by Tira, taking her hand he walked her to the control console “Are you alright my love” clearly upset she nodded, sitting on a chair she brought her knees to her chin and hugged her legs.

“There it is, well done Tars!” The image of the Draconican cruiser filled the screen.

“How long will it take to get there?” Tars asked.

“It will certainly be travelling at a sublight speed, I’m not sure how fast. But unless I missed totally it should only be a few minutes now, it was launched about 30 minutes ago” Sela was thinking, had he missed? What would happen if he had?

“Open me a channel to them Tars”

“What? You want to talk to them?” Tars was shocked, not certain this this was a good idea.

“Trust me, it’s the only way to know for sure” Sela reassured him.

“Channel open” Tars told Sela.

“This is Doctor Sela Diemos of Mira science council. Can you please explain your presence in our space?” For a moment there was silence as everyone listened for a reply.

“Leave now or you will be destroyed!” Sela’s voice was demanding now. For a moment there was silence before a crackle was heard and a rough, tortured voice came though.

“Make us – Mira scum” It finished with an even more tortured laugh and the channel went dead. For a few more moments there was just watching.. waiting…

“I don’t know about everyone else here” Sela announced “But I wish something would happen, I’m tired and want to get some sleep. Destroying accelerators and Draconian cruisers is tiring work” Sela looked across at Tira, she was slumped in the chair asleep from exhaustion.

“Something’s happening!” Tars announced. for that moment they all watched as the cruiser started to move, turning slowly towards Mira, it weapons powering up and deploying. In that instant mid part of the outer hull crumpled and disintegrated, a split second later a huge ball of metal and fire exploded out of the other side of the huge spaceship. The fireball shot into space and in seconds was gone. Everyone stood for a few moments as the cruiser foundered, it’s structure collapsing and deteriorating around itself, finally the fuel tanks ruptured and it was engulfed, every atom annhiliated by the released anti hydrogen.

The room was silent, just the beeps and whirrs of controls could be heard.

“Oh, so that’s what happens when a warship meets a Quantum Singlarity!” Sela blurted out amongst the silence. With that his walked over to Tira, picked her up and held her to his chest. “If you don’t mind now I’m going home, tomorrow is another day!”

With this he walked through the doorway, arriving at his rooms he walked into the bedroom. He laid Tira onto the bed and covered her in a blanket. Laying next to her she snuggled up to him, her arms around his chest. Sela lay there thinking, unable to sleep next to his sleeping lover. We was excited, but worried also… what would happen next time they came?

And continues where we left off…

Part 3:

Sela and Tira watched on, the energy accelerator almost energised. Just then Sela darted off, he had thought of something.

“We need to be able to power the door once we shut down the accelerator.” He told Tira. She dashed off as a computerised voice sounded out.

“Two minutes until energy discharge. Shut down no longer advised”

“Here, is this what you need?” Tira had a heavy duty patch cable over her shoulder. Her light dress now looking dirty and scruffy around her.

“Yes. Excellent! Bring it here Tira” Sela had already taken off the panel and was plugging in the patch cable “Plug that end into the auxiliary supply. It should continue to supply power after we shut off the accelerator” Tira was just plugging the  other end of the cable in when a video message suddenly appeared on the main screen. It was chancellor Galvor’s head of security.

“What’s going on there?” He demanded “We need you to shut off the energy accelerator so we can activate the defensive field” There was no hint that he was willing to negotiate.

“This is Sela Diemos. I’m sorry, but you need to wait just another minute. We can’t shut down now…”

“No Sela!” He demanded “I’ll shut it down here!”

“Do that and you’ll blow a hole in the planet and we need the accelerator to create a worm hole to… Oh there’s no time! Just wait, we’re under control here!” Sela was weary of this conversation.

“You can’t just commandeer the energy accelerator for your own mad ideas Sela” The security chief bellowed at him.

“I didn’t think you would like this but believe me it’s for the best!” At this Sela shut off the channel and to make sure he shut off external control. “Tars, in thirty seconds shut off the power to the accelerator, but wait for my signal”

“Understood doctor, this is cutting it fine”

The computer was counting down, Tira activated the doorway, it lit blue awaiting what would be it’s final operation.

“Five, four, three..” The computer counted, the accelerator lit up “Activating sequence” At this Sela and Tira watched as the blue green light emanated from the accelerator, on the screen they watched as the wormhole formed, it’s beautiful structure reaching into space from the planet. Sira was watching the readouts, then suddenly he shouted.

“My God look at that!” He and Tira watched as the fragment was sucked into the wormhole and launched int space. “A quantum singularity!” As usual Sela’s excitement was well timed.

“Sela, get Tars to shut it off!” She screamed.

“Yes, right!” Sela reached for the com unit “Tars, shut it down”

“Doing it now” Tars replied “Get here quick!” he insisted. Sela was standing there, mesmerised by the sight of the wormhole dissipating, Tira pulled at him.

“Now you stupid man!” She screamed! “We have to go!” With this Sela came running, the building rocked and Tira fell. Sela never let go, pulling Tira up, his strong arms pulling her body close to his and making for the doorway, so close yet so far. Another quake and building rocked. Sela dived for the door taking Tira with him a few moments later the door, control centre and the accelerator were all destroyed.

At the power transfer terminal Tars looked on, watching the energy accelerator tearing itself apart. All the energy stored in it’s massive coils had nowhere to go when they had removed the power to transfer to the defensive shield. Tars wasn’t sure that if what Sela and Tira had done had worked. But he realised they weren’t coming back. At that instant, the doorway in the control centred lit up blue and in fell Sela, still gripping the battered and bruised Tira. Tars turned, unable to hide the elation at seeing them.

“Doctors! Did it work?” Tars asked earnestly. Sela was gasping for breath as he gently set the unconscious Tira on the floor.

“Ah! Tars my friend!” Sela was coughing out the acrid smoke from all the burning electronics and plastics. “I think we should have had success. But as they say, only time will tell”

“Indeed” Tars replied “You both need medical attention” Tars turned and instructed the medics to report to the control room. “Is doctor Phoelan going to be alright?”

Sela got down on his knees and could see her breathing “I hope so, she’s breathing” At that moment several medics arrived. Two of them put Tira onto a portable Medi bed, the third scanned Sela with their medi scanner and gave him a shot in the neck.

“That should help you” The medic assured Sela.

“Thank you” Sela replied, rubbing his neck, now taking deep breaths easily “I feel much better”

A few moments later Tars walked up to Sela and prompted him to look outside “Look doctor Diemos, you did it!” Across the sea of steam cloud that had settled over the city, Sela looked out to see the twin suns of Mira slowly setting over the horizon. As he stood there watching, smiling, he felt the warmth of Tira next to him as she slipped her arm around his body.

“We did it!” Sela replied “You as well Tars, thank you for trusting us.”

“Thank you for saving us.” Tars smiled at them both. He looked over a message he had just been sent to him. “It looks like though that you’re in trouble for destroying the energy accelerator though, it seems the head of security is coming…”

“Let him” Sela was stern “We have got to find out if we sent our little quantum singularity back to where it came from! Can we access the Mira sensor array from here Tars?”

“We should be able to, to be honest I’ve not tried.” Tars replied.

“Let’s find out shall we?” Sela was beaming.

Part 2:

planet city 2

Tira ran out onto the balcony after Sela “What is is?”

“I don’t know, I think it’s a wall of steam coming towards us, I think the western ocean is boiling off”

“What do we do?” Tira asked, slipping her hand into Sela’s then gripping it tight.

“We have to go – now!”” Sela turned, pulling Tira behind him her light, translucent gown flowing behind her as she struggled to keep up. Sela stood before a doorway, he passed his hand over a panel.

“Chancellor Galvor?” Tira asked.

“No time for that now – we have to go to the power transfer terminal. We don’t have much time” With that Sela stepped through the doorway and disappeared, pulling Tira behind him.

At the power transfer terminal there were people running around, shouting instructions and trying to compile reports. In the middle of this a doorway in the control centre glowed blue and through it stepped Sela pulling Tira behind him. At this point everyone stopped and stared briefly. A man stepped towards them, he was older what was left of his hair was greying. He addressed them in a calm by authoritative tone.

“What are you doing here? Who are you?”

“I’m doctor Sela Diemos and this is my partner, doctor Tira Phoelan. We’re here to help” Sela gave it his most enthusiastic performance, but he could see the situation was grim and the man wasn’t impressed.

“Well doctor’s Diemos and Phoelan you’re going to have to leave, we’re in the middle of a crisi situation right now and we don’t have time for visitors. In fact, how do you have access to be here?”

“These are all very good questions….” Sela prompted

“Tars Medan, I run the terminal. We need to get an enery field up to protect us from a wall of…”

“Steam and water, yes I know. The western ocean  is boilng off. Well Tars, we’re here to help and we can answer your questions and waste time or we can get on with this.”

“Well…” Tars tried to reply.

“I think I’ve worked out why our world seems to be stuck in time and this is causing us the problems we have now”

“Tell me” Tars demanded.

“Somehow a fragment of a black hole has ended up on our planet, time hasn’t stopped, it’s just running very, very slowly because of the time dilation effect of this fragment. I don’t know how this has happened…”

“A wormhole…” Tira thought outloud. Through this she had been standing there silently. “I think this isn’t an accident, black holes don’t lose fragments of themselves. I think we’re actually under attack and whoever did this has used a wormhole to take a piece of black hole from somewhere and put it on our planet”

Sela and Tars stood there for a moment, thinking. “I like that my love. I think you’ve got it!” Sela finally said “That’s the best explanation yet for this and it also shows us how we’re going to fix this. We need to locate this fragment and get it away from us. If we’re even cleverer, we can use it against our attackers” Sela strode towards a computer console, he tapped into the keypad and brought up the path of the the object he suspected was the black hole fragment.

“Tars, can you locate this object on the suface? We need to get it the location precisely as we need to create a wormhole to take this frgment away. While I like a sauna the thought of having my lugs burned out with superhot ocean water doesn’t appeal to me any more than to you I suspect, so we need to protect ourselves from this as well” Sela was now excited, almost like a child as he was going through the motions of when needed to be done.

“I’ll do what I can” Tars replied “But how are you going to create a wormhole from here. We don’t have the equipment or the power for it.”

“You have the power for it” Tira suggested ” You can  generate around 100 gigawatts can’t you?

“Yes, for a short time” Tars replied “We needabout 50 gigawatts to generate the protective field, we can only sustain that for a few days, this could last weeks”

“It won’t end Tars” Sela told Tars, not until we get this fragment off and time runny normally”

“We can generate the wormhole from the energy accelerator” Tira suggested “we should also be able to find our attackers from there”

“The control centre for the energy accelerator is outside the city. You only have 30 minutes until the steam cloud reaches you and you won’t be inside the protective field” Tars commented grimly.

“No time to lose then my friend” Sela slapped Tars on the shoulder and headed for the doorway “oh, one small thing I forgot. I need a favour Tars”

“Anything” Tars replied.

“I need all of those 100 gigwatts in about fifteen minutes – or we’re all going to die”

“You have an interesting way of negotiating Dr Diemos”

” I know, I’m renound for it. Some people don’t seem to appreciate it!” Sela strode towards the doorway as it lit blue Tira following. “You’re not coming my love – you can’t” Sela said to TIra. “Stay here and be safe”

“Try stopping me!” Tira told him “You need my help initiating the process in time before the steam cloud hits. Even if you didn’t, I’m still coming”

“But..” Sela tried to reply

“No buts, just do it” Tira insisted and pushed him through the door following him through. They both emerged on the other side, in the control centre for the energy accelerator.

“I’ll see if I can locate our attackers with a tachyon scan, for some reason we haven’t detected them yet,  they must be invisible” Tira was taking a terminal in the functional but abandoned control centre, it overlooked a huge ring, deep underground.

“I’m on our wormhole” Sela disappeared into the room next door and could be heard pulling at the huge power isolators. He closed three of them and suddenly a loud hum started emanating from all around. He reappeared into the control room wiping his hands.

“That’s done. Have you found anything?”

“Yes, a huge Draconian space cruiser, just outside the orbit of our moons” Tira stated with a sense of victory.

“Let’s have the co-ordinates” Sela was now in his serious mode, frowning. “I’m running up the enery accelerator” Just then a crackle came though. Sela picked up his communicator, Tars voice could be heard.

“I have the impact co-ordinates of that fragment you asked for” He stated “I’ve sent it through to your command centre”

“Good, I’m going to need about 100 gigawatts in about 5 minutes”

“You’ll have it” Tars told Sela “But the steam cloud hits in about ten minutes and you need time to shut it down before we bring up our shield”

“Don’t worry about that, I know how to do that” With that he shut off his communicator.

“Co-ordinates are set” Tira told him, the humming becoming louder and louder, like a huge wheel spinning up. The ring was glowing brighter as the immense energy built up inside it. For several minutes both Sela and Tira could do nothing but watch.

Word for this week: Midnight

planet city 2

Darkness had been falling for what seemed like forever over the city of Kronamus. Midnight was forever on the brink of falling but never coming. Sela was standing on the balcony of his rooms, high up in the central tower. Tira slipped through the curtains and stood behind Sela’s masculine form, back lit against the forever dimming suns that planet Mira encircled. Sela felt the warmth of his lover’s body close to him. He didn’t turn, looking up into the star filled sky. “What are you thinking?” He asked.

“What everyone is thinking, my love” Tira purred, moving her svelte form closer to he man she clung to him, resting he head on his chest. “When will night fall and daylight return?”

“I don’t know” replied Sela, with little hope in his voice. “But even if it come tomorrow it would not help the millions on the daylight side of the planet as they have burned. Nor those on the dark side, frozen with the seas.”

“We are lucky then” Tira replied.

“Lucky… or cursed. It’s hard to tell” Sela answered. Tira turned to her man, hugged him and kissed him before again huggin him and resting her head on his chest. “Why do you do this to yourself?” Tira asked with tears running down her face. “You punish yourself for something that you could not have foreseen or prevented. Why not just accept our fortune. We are alive.”

“For now we are, but something is very wrong. I’ve been watching these skies since I was a boy and I have never seen what is happening now.”

“What is happening?” Tira asked

“Nothing. Even beyond our world the universe seems still. Planets do not move, moons do not wax and wane and asteroids do not fall. It is as if we alone are unaffected by this strange phenomenon.” Sela moved away from Tira, she stood and watched her troubled man as he gripped the balcony rails and looked up again, searching. “Something is very wrong. The question is, is it us that are wrong, or the universe?”

At that point a beep came from inside, Sela turned immediately and walked into the room. He stood in front of his computer three screens with infographics of a number of objects at different distances from the planet. He looked at the first – an orbiting space station, then the moons of Mira, then further out to asteroids, comets, other planets.

“I can’t believe it!” He exclaimed.

“What is it?” Asked Tira

“Things are happening, but very, very slowly. At least from our point of view”

“How?” Tira was asking, ever more intently. She was always amazed at how Sela could find and solve problems. She was always able to keep up with him… to a point and then his mind would dive to depths she couldn’t fathom. Not many could.

“What is going on?” Sela was gripping his head, massaging it as if trying to work his brain into action “Cmon… cmon…it’s us, it’s us either that or the whole universe has gone mad. What is this like – it’s like the universe has slowed but we haven’t… it’s like a black hole. Time seems fine here, but up there it’s not. From up there, everything is fine”

He returned to his computer and and typed in a search query. Immediately Mira appeared with the tracks of all the objects that fallen in the last few weeks. With some more furious typing he narrowed his search, less and less tracks were visible. He murmured to himself as Tira watched, unsure if she was to stand there or go.

“Yes, this could be it. Don’t go Tira, stay there!”

“What is it?” She asked nervously

“OK” he said finally “Imagine you’re a planet in space circling your sun happily, nothing much going on and then suddenly from some part of the universe a fragment of a black hole falls onto the planet. What happens?”

Tira looked and shrugged “Surely there would be a huge hole in the planet?”

“Yes, there would” he said, almost excitedly “But, it’s possible that the time dilation effects of the fragment would affect the planet. At this time our time is moving a thousand times faster than outside the planet”

“So the universe from our point of view is moving a thousand time slower”

“Yes – Exactly! And this fragment is the one I believe is to blame” Picking up the computer he showed Tira the one object track left

“It’s right in the middle of the ocean. How do we find it?”

“Ooh… we can find the general location no problem, as you said before that crater will be big. The big problem is how do we get something that probably weighs as more than Mira away from us. The other issue is that anyone getting closer to it will find when they come out that time has moved much faster on the rest of the planet. I’m not sure that knowing what the problem could be has actually got us closer to solving it”

“What do we do? What do I do? How can I help?” Tira asked urgently.

Sela smiled, he always loved how Tira would follow his causes wherever they lead “Patience my love. There’s not much we can do now, but you must get me in touch Chancellor Galvor. He needs to know about this immediately”

Tira turned, it was then that the sirens rang out. Tira looked at Sela, he prompted her to carry on. Sela looked out onto the balcony, there was a huge wall of water, or steam he wasn’t sure. But it was coming.
