Awesome Fantasy Maps from Soraya Corcoran

I saw this post on Saraya’s blog and I had to share it with you becasue she’s done such an amazing job on her art work:

Fantasy Maps

No fantasy book is complete without a map.

These are both maps for my own projects: Captain of Fortune and The Cursed Ashtian.

Lantha is a simple map, showing where all the major cities and towns are located around the country. Valen has more detail, with roads and forests added in.

A reblog or Press it wouldn’t have done it justice – So I’ve kind of copied the post in – I hope that’s ok Soraya. But seriously have a look at her blog!

Sci-Fi and Fantasy Short Stories

Over the last couple of years I’ve written a number of short and not so short stories and trying to give them the visibility they deserve is a bit hard when they’re hidden behind a menu system on my blog page. So I’ve put as many of them as I can find on this post and I’m going to pin it on my page.

Many of them aren’t finished, but you know – Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that.

The Titan Mystery

The Titan Mystery is my longest running story, set in the far future the commander and crew of the star ship Tycho become trapped in time and space while investigating a gigantic spacecraft that seems to be from distant future.

The only way for them to find a way to get free is to board the Titan and see what they can find out. What they discover is beyond they wildest dreams and nightmares.

Eternal Darkness

Black_hole.png

This short piece is part of a concept and I’m excited about where it may lead. Chronos is entering orbit of a supermassive black hole, it’s mission it to take humanity further into the future than it would ever survive. Perhaps until the end of time.

There’s loads more and I need to work and promote all of them, and this is something I hope to do more of so keep watching!

A New SciFi and Fantasy Community

So here it is, the big reveal! Last week I posted about the Science Fiction and fantasy hub that I was planning. I’ve worked out how I think this is going to work, the intention is that each contributor will add their own work, link it back to their own site or blog. The idea is that having this one hub will give greater exposure to writers work in this area and one place for readers to go. This could work and it could be great but it needs you guys!

Where is the hub?

My old Universe of Possibilities blog is the location of this project. There is a bit of my work in there from when I was using the blog, I still need to do some housekeeping to bring it up to date, but I wanted to get this going and see how it goes.

img_20160712_212443.jpg

The hub can be found from the menu’s on sfarnell.wordpress.com or there is the picture above on my sidebar which will also take you to the site. From there a menu in the top right should give you what you need.

What do you do?

This is the simple bit, go to the menu in the top corner of the site and there is a page where all the contributors will be  listed (unless you don’t want to). Read the contributors notes (this will be updated from time to time) so you know what to expect.

Leave a comment that you wish to participate, I’ll need a picture and a note to use for the contributors page and I’ll send you an invite to be an Author on the blog. This will mean that you can add all the content you need, but are not an admin.

When this has been accepted by you, the universe of possibilities blog logo will appear as an option to post from your blog. Blog away to your hearts content, do you have a short story you want to promote? Or a book? Seen a film that you want to share? I want universe of possibilities to be the place to do this. I want to see good people’s work given that extra visibility it deserves.

Make sure you leave a link back to your blog, in fact why not duplicate the post on your blog and link back to it? It’s up to you and the possibilities are universal (I hope)! I’ve left comments closed on this site, but likes are still visible, this is why it’s important to link back to your own site as the comments are meant for you and you don’t want me answering them do you?

Of course the other thing needed is those to read, you’re no less important, come and follow and join in the fun and help make this work!

What else?

The only thing now is to remember this is only run but little me. My hope is to create a great workspace hub for readers and writers of this genre. It might take a few days to get invites out and to get your profiles onto the contributor page. I will do my best to make things work well and if you have suggestions or comments then please let me know. Leave a comment or find me from the contacts page which can be found on the menu.

I hope we can make this a cool and exciting project!

Sci-Fi and Fantasy Hub on Planet Simon

As many of you will (and should) know by now I’m a bit of science fiction and fantasy nut. Whether it’s reading, watching or writing in this genre I love where it can take me. Journeys that one could never have imagined in the normal world are everyday in this world.

I’ve had a thought though, I’ve wanted for sometime to promote this work more, not just my own work but to have a place or blog where people can share their thought around things they’re written, read or watched. So I have the thought that I can use my old and currently unused Universe of possibility blog to be at the centre of this, or have a page on here where people who want to share and connect in this area can do so.

I do need people to join in with this and to help it grow, so let me know your thoughts, if you’re interested in the same genre would you be willing to join in, read, follow, help or participate. It can be as simple as letting me link to a post on your own blog, or if you really want putting something up personally. It’s so open it’s like space.

What are your thoughts bloggies?

Monday motivations -The Goragoth

I’m trying to keep some posts running through here, I always love writing for Esther’s Monday Motivations so while i had chance I thought I would. I hope you’re all well and if you guys want to ping me or whether then you know where I am 😀

I’m missing you all by the way…

The Goragoth

The tunnels under the city of Goratray were dark and forbidding like no other place. It felt like the darkness was a blanket that captivated you, like it could be cut just like the air on a misty day. But that was the point of them, they were used to capture the immortal creature and incarcerate it for all time. But Sophira was down here, dragged by an immense evil and now here he was, Maximilian the king’s best knight and only hope of seeing his daughter again.

Maximilian’s sword was sturdy in his had, ready to strike, his best sense was his hearing, a fire would only give his presence away. Goragoth had to be defeated blind, the only way he could be. Maximilian had just passed what seemed to be a junction of four tunnels and left a huge opening behind. Stopping briefly to hear what he could, It was then….

His skin crawled…

His blood ran stone cold…

He didn’t want to turn around; he knew just what he’d see and he could face anything but that! He had seen him once before and hasn’t realised who he was, now Maximilian knew as from behind his name was growled with bloodthirsty vengence.
I hope you guys like it.

Scifi Files – HAARP

The Scifi files is a series of posts taking mysteries that I’ve found on the internet and finding out more about them. Are they real? Could there be a cover up? What monster may live on, in or outside our Earth?

img_20150223_175801.jpg

HAARP or the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program developed for analysing the ionosphere with the aim of creating enhanced technology for radio communications. As a result of this work, communications to submarines over long distances has improved. However, the work at HAARP has been claimed by conspiracy theorist to be weaponised weather control.

It has been claimed that HAARP can control the weather and as a result, people’s minds and has been blamed for causing droughts, plane crashes and the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003. HAARP has also been blamed for earthquakes and it’s claimed it could flip the magnetic pole of the Earth.

These claims have been branded as false, outside the operating parameters of the equipment. Some of these claims have been branded as not possible in natural science. The full story on HAARP can be found here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Frequency_Active_Auroral_Research_Program

What do we think? Could this facility really control the weather? People’s minds and cause earthquakes? To me it doesn’t seem possible, but then… what if it could do all of this? I agree it’s very far fetched. But if it was true – they certainly wouldn’t tell us – would they?

Minecraft Steve and the Lost City – Part 2

Following on from his last adventure, Steve has stumbled across the lost city of Minos and he needs to help free it’s people to get back home:

Steve was standing there, the city was so magnificent, he couldn’t help but stare at it’s beauty – he was was in awe! The buildings were made in pure white marble, the setting sun shone off their walls and edges like glass, the city was falling into darkness with the sun setting fast.

“We must hurry now!” said Preeta “As darkness falls the monsters will come out – they are here to keep out any rescuers!”

“Let’s hurry then, is there somewhere safe we can go?”

“Yes” Preeta replied “follow me quickly!” with that Preeta was off, faster than Steve could run. He could still see him but he was getting further and further away. Around him Steve could hear the moans of the zombies and the rattle of the skeletons emerging from their slumber.

“Quickly young crafter!” Preeta shouted back to Steve “Time is short!”

As fast as he could Steve ran toward Preeta, his diamond sword drawn and ready to defend himself and Preeta. In moments he had caught up with Preeta a host of monsters was making their way towards him. Swinging his sword Steve cut down two zombies and a skeleton. He turned back and some creepers were creeping menacingly toward him. Cutting them down with some swift strokes they were down before they could explode.

“Flick the switch near to you crafter!” Preeta told Steve – he flicked it and nothing happened. Looking around, Steve felt anxious as the monsters crept closer.

“Flick it back up crafter, we need to flick our switches at the same time!” Preeta quickly explained. Steve wasn’t going to question Preeta, he flicked the switch up, looked across at Preeta.

“Now!” Steve shouted. They both flicked their switches down and a stone door slid across. Wasting no time they both shot into the doorway, Preeta flicked a switch up while he was inside and the door slid shut. Turning Steve noticed a skeleton had made it inside, slicing at the skeleton with his sword it soon collapsed on the floor.

Suddenly there was quiet. The distant sound of monsters now safely behind the thick walls. Looking around there was light in the room. But no torches, Steve walked up to the glowing stone and touched it. The stone felt faintly warm on his fingers.

“Glowstone?” Steve asked Preeta.

“Yes.” Preeta answered.

“I’ve heard about it – I thought it was a myth!”

“It’s not a myth crafter – if you know where to find it it is common, but it’s not without danger to find it.”

“Call me Steve – where does it come from?” He probed Preeta – very curious about the unusual stone.

“It comes from the Nether realm Steve, where the monsters are far more dangerous and the Nether Dragons rule over their hoards of gems and other precious blocks!”

“Nether dragons? I’ve seen one before and I helped it back to it’s realm. Are we in the nether realm? This whole place should be dark and underground, yet the sun is here!”

“So many questions Steve – in good time you will understand the answers. But before you do – we must free my people. This entrance to the city was safe as two are needed to open the door. The one evil crafter could not enter here, despite all his best efforts. From here we must find where the gold keys have been hidden so we can unlock the gates to the enchanted halls of Minos. The people are there, trapped, but hidden.”

“How do we find these keys?” Steve asked, almost afraid to as somehow he knew this wasn’t going to be as easy as it sounded.

“Through here Steve.” Preeta showed him another large stone doorway, he opened it with a lever and beyond was a dark hallway, just big enough for one person.

“What’s in there?” Steve asked uneasily, this trip was getting worse the further it went on.

“I don’t know Steve.” Preeta answered flatly, I cannot enter this place. It is enchanted, kept safe so none from the city may enter. You must go in and come back with the keys, or we will be trapped here in this city and these monsters!”

“This doesn’t look good – it’s dark!” Steve protested. “There’s none of your glowstone! There could be anything down there!”

Preeta shrugged “Yes – there might!” he said calmly. “But we know what’s out there – don’t we?” he pointed to the door to the outside, where groans and rattles could just be heard.

Steve wasn’t happy – he gave Preeta a look of disapproval. He had a few torches left, putting one in the tunnel Steve advanced forward, diamond sword in hand.

To be continued…

Book Review – The Beauty Thief

Chronicles of the Twelve Realms

I rarely write book review posts, that becasue it takes me son long to read one you guys would get bored between posts and forget me. But I have just finsished The Beauty Thief, written by my bloggie friend Rachael Ritchey. The premise of the story is about where real beauty comes from and that outer beauty is superficial and without inner beauty we are an empty shell. The message is powerful and the imagery in the story around this is powerful.

The story is set around the betrothal of a young princess to  a high prince and a mysterious character that has the ability to steal beauty to stay alive for many centuries. The story start off in a very chilled out way, there is a lot of familiarisation with the events, people and their backgrounds. Events in the book change when treachery and the key event of the story takes place.

After this the plot splits into different sub plots as honourable knights and dastadly villains play their own part. Setting against each other and finding their way around all the problems thown ni their way. There is more treachery and battles as the characters start to converge towards the story climax. The pace picks up a lot in the second half making it hard to put down as I found the different plot threads knitted together.

The final climax ends in a surprising way, I’m not going to say how because I want you guys to read it for yorselves. But as with any good story there are questions left which need answering and the inevitable thread which my or may not lead to a follow on.

This was not my normal kind of read, I approached it with an open mind and I was pleasantly surprised  with the story. It’s something that would appeal to many, it’s simple language appealing to younger and older readers alike. Sure, some purists may think that the language is newer than the time the story is set and doesn’t work. But that’s not the point. This didn’t set out to be Lord of the Rings and only a very brave person would set out down that path. Its aimed at being a read that could be easy for young or old. It’s an enjoyable read and I would suggest all you reader bloggies should give it a try! Have a look at Rachaels website for details on where to get it.
