I’m sorry, it’s me – I can’t help it. I’ve tried to keep the insanity from the door of this corner of the web but I can’t do it any longer.
The world in which we live is wonderful, beautiful and terrible thing and yet there’s few – well quite a lot of people actually that seem to want to ruin it for the rest of us. So I’m going to tell you about it. There’s will likely be the odd rude word and definitely a venting of frustration but I’m going to try and take the burrs off with some humour.
Some of you may even enjoy it… but I’m not going to count on it.
I’m probably going to upset a few people here, I don’t know if I’m going to be sorry about that becasue this is what I see and how I see it. So I’m going to come out with it – like ripping a plaster off the skin it needs to be quick to the pain is not prolonged.
Kids are useless with technology!
Now I have to qualify here what I mean by kids – being someone who’s nearly 50 I mean those typically in their 20’s and under certainly but it might be a bit older too. You know who you are if you’re reading this and who you know who it isn’t too! If you’re in this age bracket and can Google then this doesn’t apply to you and I apologise!
I remember way back in the mists of time before the year 2000 to the early 90’s and what computers and technology was like then. It was crap! If you didn’t know what you were doing then you were in for a rough ride with technology. Constant glitches and error messages and the like. Oh and I remember the terror of being someone asked to get loads of documents photocopied. I was asked becasue that meant everyone in the office could watch as the whole thing imploded and I had to strip it apart to find the fraction of a piece of paper that was causing the jam.
PC’s constantly failed from Windows 95 and upwards. One day something was working and the next it wasn’t for some random reason. Sometimes re-starting it would work and sometimes not… But you were screwed if you couldn’t find the answer becasue guess what?
There was no Google, YouTube, Blogs or much else becasue the internet… was crap!
You might wonder where I’m going with this… it’s simple. If that was technology today I feel that so many of those younger people would lose their minds and disappear in a cloud of dust. I do apologise if this isn’t you but there are so many in this younger bracket that can’t seem to use or know what technology is or how it works.
Looking up anything for me is a dream these days, I look on Google. If I’m feeling really lazy I can even talk to my device, I don’t have to type it. This lot though…
“What do I Google?”
Are you fucking serious?!? Ask it the bloody question, I’m not saying it’s perfect but a lot of the time I get the answer I want, from bus timetables to when is the ISS going to next fly overhead.
It doesn’t end there though, there were loads of slightly different but looking so much the same power plugs for devices. Now there’s two or three depending and it’s either USB2, USBC or that crappy Apple lighting thing. That’s it… “It’s the one that’s kind of roundy…” is what I hear. I mean it’s enough to make me want to boil my brain.
It’s clear that people are becoming more of technology consumers rather than users. We want the websites and the phones and the devices to work so we can get on with the important business of screaming on social media that the world is flat because it seems we’ve also forgotten that the world is fucking round and has been for thousands of years when a smart Greek guy worked it out… but oh no… he’s wrong, NASA is wrong we’re all being lied to.
Bring back the good old days of crap technology I say, at least you has to know something to get by in life.

I hear you talking brother!
We live in a world where folk download apps, create Instagram accounts to promote themselves, navigate from one end of the UK with their phones, know who is trending, which films to watch (on their phones) and so many other wonderful (sarcasm warning….) things….
And YET a substantial portion of them:
1. Deny climate change
2. Believe Covid, 9/11 and (fill in the blank )……… was government conspiracy
3. Think Boris Johnson is still a good man for PM while across the Atlantic will vote from Trump
4. Excuse Putin and the Kremlin for anything they do
5. Judge others by the colour of their skin, theistic /atheistic beliefs & orientations
6. Think ‘meh’ qualifies as a critical appraisal of a film, book or tv series.
Pity help them when a solar flare upsets all the comms links. (Or course that will be a government conspiracy too!)

I think all this points to a failure in education… simple as.

I’ll agree with that!
Starting with those who call themselves adults.

Well, I understand exactly what you’re saying, clearly showing my age too! And correct, there are definitely nuances between using, consuming, and understanding

The common stereotype today seems to be that Millennials and Gen Z-ers are all tech wizards, but using technology is not the same thing as understanding technology. That is an important distinction.
