Letter to Myself – Open Next Year (2024)

For those of you I haven’t yet caught up with yet – Happy new year to you! Those of you that have been followers for some time will know that this is something that I take part in early in the new year, I take a look at my latter for last year and write myself a letter to open next year.

Back in 2016 my friend Erin of Bubbles and Beebots tagged me in on this and I’ve been keeping this up since then as I have found this to be an interesting and relevant way to remember where I was a year ago and maybe help guide me on the year ahead.

For anyone who reads this I would definitely recommend giving this a go at least once as see what you think of it. Do it in the way that you think is best, there’s no rules and for me at least this is far more worthwhile that any new year resolutions. This isn’t just about looking back, it’s about looking forward too. I’ve not tagged any bloggies on the end of this but really if you fancy it, do it and link it to this post so I can see who and what’s going on.

Last year’s letter is here:

Letter to Myself – Open Next Year (2023)

Hello Simon of 2024 if as I hope you’re reading this you survived another year on a rock spinning through the vast cosmos , shared with about about 8 billion other ape people (yes the count crossed the 8 billion mark in 2022). You did good – well done. I’m tempted to say badass but you’re not that badass.

2022 started with so much hope, with the pandemic further behind us all the world looked like a place of new possibility and future bright with renewed life and hopefully a different perspective from mankind with a greater sense of togetherness. The sad thing is it didn’t turn out that way. Leaders that were supposed to have led us over the last 2 years had been breaking their own rules, war broke out in Ukraine and is still tragically being waged today. The queen that had been a figurehead your whole life died and a joke of a government, not content with fucking us over – then decided to fuck us up as well.

2022 was a painful year and in many way as you sit here you can kind of see why. The old dross that needs to be removed from life is now clear and present in everyone’s mind, this might not be an easy year but maybe as many say this is a year of healing – cutting out the scar tissue we don’t need to enable that healing to take place. Showing us the way way we must not go so we can see that ways we must if we are courageous enough to take them.

I don’t know what the year ahead will hold, but if you’re sitting here writing 2024’s post all will have been revealed to you. Time is like a book, a story, past present and future exist as one they are merely pages of the book and we can only go forward in time with our backs forward looking to the past for guidance.

But what about 2024 Simon? What will you have done? Will you have lived up to the expectations of 2023 Simon. Let’s see shall we? Rather than set goals or resolutions here are some intentions for you. There are 7 of them as 7 is the supposed divine number:

1. Be more Stoic, you’re started to realise the benefits of Stoicism now start live it.
2. Be mindful in what you do, present in the moment.
3. Be grateful for all you have.
4. Push yourself to do bigger and better things.
5. Leave behind those things or people that don’t serve you.
6. Get outdoors, see nature or the universe to appreciate it and go to different places.
7. Create, doesn’t matter what it is. Painting, drawing, writing, making shit – create your heart out.

You’ve got this Simon and you can do it… Now go and smash 2023 and I’ll see you here next year. Oh and don’t forget your towel!

I would challenge anyone who gets this far to have a go at this themselves, write a letter to your future self. Every year when I read this it’s gives me that look back at what’s been which helps me work out what I need to do this next year. No peeking until next year though!

Let me know if you’re going to do this and all the best for the next 12 chapters and 365 pages!

I’m sorry, it’s me – I can’t help it. I’ve tried to keep the insanity from the door of this corner of the web but I can’t do it any longer. The world in which we live is wonderful, beautiful and terrible thing and yet there’s few – well quite a lot of people actually…

  1. I’ve been curious about doing this the past few years after reading your posts/letters, but then I forget. I think my letters might be boring… But, I will create a draft right now, which will remind me to give it a try at the end of this year.

  2. I love this idea Simon! I’ve said it before but maybe this year I’ll actually write that future letter to myself. Great way of looking back and looking forward and it keeps us mindful. Love your seven intentions too. Here’s to making 2023 the best year we possibly can. Hugs to you 🙂

      1. I hope you do, if you post it I would certainly like to read it. But either way funny or terrifying it could be something to look forward to next year or give you a challenge to grow into. 🙂

  3. I love this idea, Simon! And I pretty much have the same goals for the year ahead, try new things, keep creating, and I want to make time to be with friends, I lost a lot of them last year. Wishing you all the best in 2023!!! ☺

  4. Happy New Year, friend! 2022 was kind of a mixed bag for me, but considering 2020 and 2021 were unmitigated disasters, a mixed bag feels like a real improvement. I’m just hoping the trend keeps going upward.
