The SciFi Files – Julia

The Scifi files is a series of posts taking mysteries that I’ve found on the internet and finding out more about them. Are they real? Could there be a cover up? What monster may live on, in or outside our Earth?

The first unexplained or mysterious file regards a a sound recorded on March 1st 1999 designated “Julia”.

The source of this sound is said to have been an Iceberg running aground off Antarctica as this snippet from Wikipedia states:

Julia is a sound recorded on March 1, 1999 by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA said the source of the sound was most likely a large iceberg that had run aground off Antarctica. It was loud enough to be heard over the entire Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array. The unidentified sound lasted for about 15 seconds. Due to the uncertainty of the arrival azimuth, the point of origin could be between Bransfield Straits and Cape Adare.[6]

The mystery goes on to say that at about the same time NASA took pictures of an object twice the size of the Empire State building in the general area at the same time. These pictures are classified, so where has this information come from? An over ambitious conspiracy theorist? Just a made up story? But what if is isn’t, what if huge monsters exist in our oceans that we have not yet discovered? Or maybe someone has, but hasn’t lived to tell the tale?

Over the years many creatures have been washed up on our shores that we have not only never seen before but are far larger than we would imagine. The stories over the years of giant squid and giant sharks over 30 metres long refuse to die despite the lack of proof. In those deep, dark depths of the oceans where humans rarely go – we cannot tell what could live down there, what kinds of gigantic creatures could have evolved. Creatures large enough that could swallow a ship? Ships don’t just disappear – do they?

But what ever made that noise it was big, loud and the sound travelled thousands of miles. Maybe we’ll never know what made that noise…

Until the next mystery.

Have a look at the first post of an idea I’ve had – a bit like the X Files, looking at the myths and legends that exist and having a look and asking – cold they be true?
